What does a Top 25 Woman in FinTech wish she'd known earlier in her career?

At our latest Role Model event, we sat down with Amnah Ajmal, CEO, bestselling author, and one of the Top 25 Women in FinTech in the US, to talk about the side of success that doesn't make it onto LinkedIn.

Here are her 5 career lessons worth saving:

1. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint.
Spend the first 10 years building expertise, the next 10 becoming a leader, and the final 10 choosing the opportunities, salary, and roles you want.

2. Stop changing yourself to fit the room.
Rejection can make you question whether you're too different, too outspoken or simply not what people are looking for. But don't let it convince you to become someone else. Stay true to your perspective and keep looking for the people and opportunities that value what makes you unique. “Your voice is your voice, you’'ll find the audience that values it instead of having to change who you are.”

3. Financial independence is career freedom.
Build sources of passive income that give you the freedom to walk away from an environment that takes more than it gives. Because the ultimate career power is having a choice.

4. Replace "what if" with "when."
Not every milestone will happen when you expect it to. Instead of questioning your progress when things take longer, keep building towards the career you want. What if your promotion takes another year? What if your goals happen later than expected? In Amnah's perspective: in a 35-year career, reaching a milestone in 2028 instead of 2027 won't define your success. Keep going.

5. Success has a side nobody sees.
Behind every impressive job title are struggles, vulnerabilities, and difficult moments that rarely get shared. Success isn't just about what the world sees. It's also about everything it took to get there.
